Rajmachi Fort is the most famous nestled amidst the Sahyadri Ranges and it offers one of the best treks in Maharashtra. The fort is located at a height of about 2710 feet above sea level and provides the visitors with an amazing view of the mountains and the backwaters of Shirota dam. Kalsubai Trek :
Maharashtra does not have any limit for trekking destinations and if it is a monsoon, then the number of trekkers would shoot up to a great height. The Sahyadri hill ranges are large enough to encompass umpteen number of trekking spots. Kalsubai is one fine example of an exciting trekking trip and adventure junkies would fall for the trails that are easy yet unpredictably amazing.
Kalsubai mountain seems to be the highest peak in Maharashtra and thus it is considered to be one of the best places for trekking near Mumbai. The peak is located at a height of about 1646 meters above sea level in the Sahyadris in Akole taluka of Ahmednagar district. In the base of the peak, one can see a small temple of Kalsubai and from the top, the views of the surroundings are of greater importance. There are Harihargad, Anjaneri, Ratangad, Brahmagiri, Kulang and many more in the surroundings. Like any other trek, Kalusbai trek also gives you one base to start it from that is Bari Gaon with a population of a few hundred.
On the trails, you would be able to find steel railings, chains, ladders etc to help you climb smoothly at the places of slight difficulty. There are various trekking routes as well as the animal track to reach the pinnacle and the main route originates at Bari Gaon, located about 6 kilometres away from Bhandardara.
LOHAGAD FORT :
It is one of the best places to visit in Lonavala and also one of the popular historical places in Maharashtra that can be visited as part of Lonavala tour packages. Perched a hillock at an altitude of 1050 m, the fort separates the Indrayani basin from the Pawna basin. It is also among the popular trekking places to visit near Pune & Mumbai. In Maharashtra Lohagad Fort is one of the most visited forts and among popular heritage sites near Pune.
In the recent days, the fort has been declared as a protected monument by the government. The hill fort is designed in the shape of the tail of a scorpion. The fort can be reached from any of its four entrances, namely Maha Darwaja, Ganesh Darwaja, Hanuman Darwaja and Narayan Darwaja. The sculpting can be seen on the Maha Darwaja and there is a small cave at the third gate which was initially used for storage of food material. The fort is still intact in all the four gates.
This place makes an ideal trekking destination for trekkers from Pune and Mumbai because of its accessibility, ease of trek and lush green surroundings. Lohagad trek is very popular, especially during monsoons. Malavli is just 7km from Lohagad, the base of the trek. This trek is a simple, very scenic and pleasant trek and the distance from Malavali to Lohagad can be covered in two hours. If one has to explore the fort along with the trek till Vinchu Kata and view the Mumbai Pune Expressway then 2 hours is a good time.
